The total internal reflection within the prism results in the light beam being reflected back with minimal deviation. This property is particularly useful in applications where precise control over the direction of light is required. For instance, in optical instruments like periscopes and binoculars, right-angle prisms are used to change the direction of light without altering its path.
The hypotenuse face of the prism is typically coated with an anti-reflective (AR) coating. This coating is designed to minimize reflection losses, which can degrade the quality of the transmitted image. By reducing the amount of light that is reflected off the surface, AR coatings ensure that the maximum amount of light passes through the prism, thereby enhancing the overall performance of the optical system.
