PBS Polarizing Beamsplitter Cube

Polarizing beam splitting cubes are mainly used to clean polarization or in combination with a waveplate to act as a power attenuator. The typical extinction ratio of polarizing cubes is >500:1, for advanced applications cubes are produced to have Tp:Ts contrast ratio as high as 1000:1 and LIDT up to 20 J/cm2 (1064 nm, 10 ns, 10 Hz).

Description

Polarizing beamsplitter cubes (PBS cubes) are optical components widely used in various high-energy laser systems, optical instruments, and scientific applications. These cubes are specifically designed to split an incoming beam of light into two orthogonally polarized beams, typically transmitting one polarization (usually p-polarized) while reflecting the other (s-polarized). This makes them essential in applications requiring precise polarization management, high contrast, and efficient energy handling.

The typical construction of a polarizing beamsplitter cube involves two right-angle prisms glued or optically bonded together. One prism surface is coated with a thin-film dielectric coating optimized to selectively transmit and reflect certain polarizations. When an unpolarized light beam enters the cube, it is split at the dielectric interface according to polarization, with one component transmitted through the cube and the other reflected at a 90-degree angle. This efficient polarization separation is ideal for various laser and non-laser systems where controlling light polarization is critical.

Key Features and Performance

  1. High Damage Threshold: High-energy polarizing beamsplitter cubes are designed to withstand intense laser beams. They are built with coatings and materials capable of handling high-power densities, making them suitable for demanding environments in research and industrial settings. Some cubes are rated for damage thresholds as high as 20 J/cm² for pulsed lasers and 2-3 kW/cm for continuous wave (CW) lasers, depending on their design and coating technology.
  2. Broad Wavelength Range: Beamsplitter cubes are available for a wide spectral range, from the ultraviolet (UV) through visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) regions. Standard options typically cover 355 nm, 532 nm, and 1064 nm, catering to various laser sources, including Nd or Yb based lasers. Custom wavelength options can also be fabricated for specific applications.
  3. High Extinction Ratio: The extinction ratio of a PBS cube indicates its efficiency in separating the polarizations. High-energy polarizing cubes often achieve an extinction ratio greater than 1000:1, ensuring high contrast between transmitted and reflected beams. This characteristic is particularly valuable in applications requiring clean polarization states, such as imaging, interferometry, and spectroscopy.
  4. Precision Optical Design: Polarizing beamsplitter cubes are crafted with tight dimensional tolerances and flatness specifications, allowing precise alignment in optical setups. The typical transmitted beam deviation is within 3 arc minutes, and surface flatness is usually λ/8 or better, ensuring minimal distortion and high-quality beam splitting.
  5. Durability and Coating Stability: The dielectric coatings on PBS cubes are engineered for stability and long-term durability, even in high-energy laser applications. These coatings resist environmental degradation and provide consistent performance over time, making them reliable components in both controlled laboratory environments and more variable industrial settings.
